NHS urgent dental care in Sunderland
Fulwell & John St Dental operates an NHS Urgent Dental Access Centre (UDAC), providing prompt dental care for people in Sunderland who are in pain and need to be seen quickly.
Appointments are available to anyone, even if you’re not a registered patient at our practice, both adults and children are welcome.

This service is delivered alongside NHS 111 and is designed to get you out of pain as quickly as possible.
Please note: This service is for urgent dental problems only. It is not available for routine check-ups, walk-ins, or patients currently undergoing a course of treatment elsewhere.

What constitutes
Urgent dental care
Our Urgent Dental Access Centre is here for people who are in genuine dental pain or distress that cannot wait for a routine appointment.
You may be eligible to use this service if you are experiencing any of the following:
- Severe or persistent toothache that cannot be managed with over-the-counter painkillers.
- Dental abscess infections that cause swelling, pain and possibly fever.
- Broken or knocked-out teeth.
- Mouth bleeding following a dental procedure or injury that you cannot stop at home.
- Swelling in the mouth or face that could be a sign of infection.
- Fractured, loose or displaced fillings causing pain.
- Severe bleeding from the gums, or acute problems affecting soft tissues such as the cheeks or tongue.
Please do not use this service for routine dental care such as check-ups, hygiene appointments, or ongoing treatment.
Urgent appointment slots are limited: using them only when genuinely needed means we can help those with the greatest clinical need.
NHS urgent dental care FAQs
This service is open to anyone experiencing one or more of the urgent problems listed above, provided:
- You are not currently getting ongoing treatment from an NHS dentist.
- You are unable to get an urgent appointment with your regular NHS dentist in time.
Standard NHS charges and exemptions apply.
An urgent appointment is charged at the NHS Band 1 rate (currently £27.90), which covers assessment, diagnosis and any immediate pain-relief treatment given at that visit.
If you think you may be entitled to free NHS dental treatment (for example, if you are pregnant, under 18, or receiving certain benefits) you can check your eligibility on the NHS website.
UDAC appointments must be made online by using the book now buttons on this page. Please only book if you have one of the urgent problems listed above and cannot access a prompt appointment with a local NHS dentist.
Appointment slots are limited and reserved for those with the greatest clinical need. If you book an appointment and can no longer attend, please cancel as soon as possible so someone else in pain can take your slot.

Our staff are here to help you when you need it most. The NHS has a zero-tolerance policy towards aggression or abusive behaviour, and we ask all patients to treat our team with the same care and respect they show to you.
If you need urgent dental care outside of our opening hours, please visit 111.nhs.uk or call 111.
An NHS 111 health adviser will discuss your symptoms and, if needed, help you find an out-of-hours urgent dental appointment in your area.
Please be aware that most general hospitals do not have an on-call dental service, so NHS 111 is always the right first call for out-of-hours dental emergencies.

UDAC SERVICES FAQs
Do I need to be registered at Fulwell & John St Dental to use the UDAC?
No. The UDAC is open to anyone experiencing an urgent dental problem, whether or not you are a registered patient at our practice. You do not need a referral, simply get in touch with us.
Can children use the Urgent Dental Access Centre?
What happens at an urgent dental appointment?
Can I use the UDAC if I'm already having treatment with another dentist?
I'm a Practice Plan member, can I use the UDAC for emergencies?
No. If you are a Practice Plan member, your emergency care is handled differently. Please contact the practice directly during opening hours, or call 08081 698 117 if you need help outside of surgery hours.
What if my dental emergency is outside your opening hours?
If you need urgent dental help when the practice is closed, please call NHS 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk. They can provide advice, help manage your symptoms until you can be seen, and if necessary refer you to an out-of-hours urgent dental service in the area. For a life-threatening emergency, such as severe swelling affecting your breathing, call 999 or go to A&E immediately.
What if I book and then can't make my appointment?
Please cancel your appointment as soon as possible if your circumstances change or your pain resolves. UDAC slots are limited and in high demand: cancelling promptly means another patient in genuine urgent need can take your place.
